Hinderwell CP School is an exciting and innovative community school committed to providing the highest standard of education for every pupil. We share, with parents, the responsibility for teaching our children and preparing them for the future. It is a place where children really matter and every individual’s ability is recognised, developed and rewarded.
We see ourselves at the heart of the community and are proud of the strong links we have with local community groups and businesses; and the use we make of local resources such as the art gallery and museums.
Should you wish to visit the school to see our excellent facilities, please do not hesitate to contact the office, or pop in to make an appointment. We will be happy to see you.
Most children have their first experience of school in our Early Years Department. The experienced and caring staff provide a warm and welcoming learning environment for our young pupils. Children learn important skills while involved in structured play activities; developing imagination, curiosity, patience, concentration and the ability to cooperate with others.
The relationships forged in Early Years continue as the children move into school. Circle time, assemblies and class activities help to promote mutual respect and consideration for others throughout the school community. This is reinforced through the inclusion partnership with Springhead Special School. Children from both schools are taught alongside each other. All the children experience a rich and stimulating curriculum and receive the support and attention they need. Barriers are broken and friendships formed.
The school dates from 1932 and has a modern interior with up to date resources and equipment. As well as colourful and well equipped classrooms, a school hall and a spacious Early Years unit, we have a separate dining area and numerous small rooms for group or specialist work. The Library and Learning Resource Centre provides a quiet calm environment, in which children can read quietly, carry out research, or simply exchange books.
Our Information and Communication Technology (ICT) facilities are excellent: an ICT suite, interactive whiteboards in many classrooms and high speed Broadband connection for Internet access. We also have a full-time computer technician, employed by the school, who supports the children’s work and ensures the smooth running of the school network.
Set within its own attractive grounds, the school has a large playground, sports field, play areas, gardens and a floodlit all-weather pitch. There is an adjacent sensory garden and woodland, we are also within easy walking distance of the Mere, beach, harbour and castle; all providing exciting opportunities for stimulating, active learning.
At Hinderwell we want every child to develop a love of learning, achieve their potential and leave us well prepared for secondary school and adult life. Children are expected to work hard and achieve their best. They are taught by talented staff who are caring and committed and who have high expectations of children and themselves.
We value equally all aspects of academic and personal success. The development of literacy and numeracy are given high priority at Hinderwell School. However, we are also committed to developing rounded individuals by providing the widest possible educational opportunities. We are particularly proud of our achievement in ICT and the arts.
Our commitment to excellence in and out of the classroom is shown in the range of sporting activities we promote. Children have the opportunity to play rounders, football, basketball, netball, rugby and participate in gymnastics and other sports. We have taken part in a wide range of sports competitions and have won many cups and medals. Children have opportunities to experience a range of outdoor and adventurous activities including a residential visit. Children can also join the school choir, learn to play an instrument or go to one of the many clubs run at lunchtime or after school.
Our motto Learning and growing together sets out our vision for the school. All children have an entitlement to an education which meets their needs and will help them go through new gateways as their future unfolds. It places a huge responsibility on the school and we meet it head on with enthusiasm and skill. We do the best we possibly can for every child. For children with special needs we have a caring and experienced team who ensure they receive the support and attention they deserve. Equally we ensure that gifted and talented children are challenged in their learning. All children experience a rich and exciting curriculum that fosters creativity, imagination and a real joy for learning.
